
Soichiro MATSUTANI
Born in Ono City, Fukui Prefecture, he is a Japanese cellist and a member of Quartet Fugue.
He received Third Prize at the 15th Viva Hall Cello Competition.
At the 75th All Japan Student Music Competition (Cello Division, University Category), he was awarded Second Prize at the National Finals and the Yokohama Citizen Award. He also won First Prize at the Nagoya Competition (High School Category, Cello Division) and Third Prize at the National Finals of the 73rd edition of the same competition.
Further distinctions include the Governor’s Award at the 71st Fukui Prefectural Music Competition, the Sakai Mayor’s Award at both the 5th and 6th Sakai Kuzuryu Music Competition, and the Highest Award at the 31st Japan Classical Music Competition.
He appeared in the “Young Musicians Soaring to the World” program at the 36th Kyoto Art Festival, where he received the Kyoto Prefectural Governor’s Award. As a soloist, he has performed with the Central Aichi Symphony Orchestra and was selected to appear in the Tokyo University of the Arts Morning Concert, performing with The Geidai Philharmonia Orchestra Tokyo. He has also appeared as Guest Principal with major orchestras in Japan.
His festival appearances include the Kiso Music Festival, Kitakyushu Music Festival, Kaminoyama Music Festival, and participation in the Seiji Ozawa Music Academy. He has attended masterclasses given by Michal Kaňka , Steven Isserli, Antonio Meneses, Raphael Pidoux, and Wen-Sinn Yang.
In 2022, he was awarded a scholarship from the Aoyama Music Foundation and has been active as an Echigo Ruby Artist since 2023. As a member of Quartet Fugue, he won First Prize in the String Quartet Division at the 13th Akiyoshidai Music Competition, together with the Beethoven Prize and the Yamaguchi Prefectural Governor’s Award (Grand Prix), as well as First Prize and the Beethoven Homage Award at the 5th Munetsugu Hall String Quartet Competition. He has received scholarships from the 34th and 35th Matsuo Academic Foundation and is a Fellow of the Suntory Hall Chamber Music Academy (Seasons 7 and 8).
He studied cello with Sawako Ikeda, Chiyoe Matsukuma, Masaharu Karita, and currently with Kenji Nakagi. He also studied chamber music under Koichiro Harada, Kikuei Ikeda, Yukiko Yoshida, and Nobuko Yamazaki.
After graduating from Fukui Prefectural Ohno High School, he completed his studies at the Tokyo University of the Arts, receiving the Doseikai Award upon graduation. He is currently enrolled in the Master’s program at the Graduate School of Music at the same university.
